Lectures

Campus Lecture Series that Feature Ethnography:

In addition to the course requirements for the Ethnography Certificate, students must also attend two public talks or other events that feature ethnography and submit a short critical reflection on each of these talks. The following lecture series regularly feature ethnography-informed events:

Ethnography Hub
Ethnography and Social Theory Colloquium
Workshop in Urban Ethnography

Students may attend lectures outside of these series as well. Many departments, programs, and MacMillan Center councils host occasional lectures, workshops, and symposia that feature ethnography.

The parameters for the lecture write-ups are as follows:

  • They must consist of 1-2 pages (you can write more!), double-spaced, in 12-point text, with 1-inch margins.
  • In the header of your write-up, please include your name, email address, as well as: the date, time, and location of the event; the event title; and the the name of the speaker(s).
  • About half of your write-up should consist of an account of the event itself: the main argument(s), sources of evidence, methods and conclusions. The remaining portion should consist of: your own reaction, including how the lecture relates to (and may have changed your views of) things; what struck you as new; and questions that you feel were left unaddressed or unanswered.
